This article has a lot of people talking, here is what we know: Breast implant associated ALCL is a rare and treatable type of lymphoma that can develop AROUND implants. It is not a cancer of the breast tissue itself.
Because it is so rare (a few hundred cases worldwide and 126 cases in the US out of the millions and millions of patients with implants) the cause is not yet clearly understood. It seems to be associated with textured implants, filled with either silicone or saline.
If you have implants and develop swelling or fluid collection around the implant, you should see your plastic surgeon for an evaluation. For the patients who developed BIA-ALCL, this fluid collection appeared on average 8 years after the breast implants were placed.
Treating BIA-ALCL is by removing the implant and the capsule around the implant with the fluid. For most patients this is enough to cure the disease. In very rare cases it may be necessary to have chemotherapy or radiation.
