Many women choose to have breast reconstruction surgery following breast cancer. Cancer prevention and treatment can often leave survivors with uneven breasts or no breasts. Breast reconstruction can take place immediately following a mastectomy, in some cases a lumpectomy. During reconstruction a plastic surgeon recreates the breast using an implant, a flap of tissue from a donor site on the body, or both. Most often, this can be all be done during one operation.
In some cases, immediate reconstruction is not possible. Surgeons may recommend waiting until treatments such as chemotherapy are finished before proceeding with a breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction can be done years later if desired.
Both breast reconstruction options come with their pros and cons. Implant reconstructions are simpler surgeries with quicker recovery times. However, flap reconstruction requires less attention over the course of a lifetime. A breast reconstruction is all a matter of what is right for the patient and her individual situation. Each breast cancer is unique and so is every reconstruction.
